What is Curriculum Assistance?
Curriculum Assistance (CA) is designed to provide support for students, so that they can be successful in general education classes and moves them toward becoming a more independent learner responsible for their own education.
Essential components of CA are described as follows:
- COLLABORATION/COMMUNICATION: The success of the student in CA depends on effective communication between the special education teachers and the student’s general education teachers, parents and guardians, as well as the students themselves.
- STUDY SKILLS: The study skills component includes teaching your child strategies aimed at the student’s overall success in school.
- TUTORIAL: The CA teacher plays the role of academic “coach” for your child, which involves previewing, reviewing and clarifying general education lessons or concepts, so that your student can successfully complete a homework or classwork assignment, test, or quiz independently. Please note: CA is not for completing homework assignments unless the assignment can be used to re-teach a lesson or concept. Homework for all classes is expected to be completed at home.
- CURRICULUM: The student’s IEP goals will be the basis for the CA curriculum creating an individualized program for each student.
- GRADING: Grades earned in CA will reflect performance in general education courses and effective use of time while in CA.
Daily/Weekly Activities may include, but are not limited to:
- Teaching study skills
- Checking assignment notebook/ agenda for upcoming assignments
- Prioritizing assignments
- Organizing notebooks
- Reviewing for quizzes/tests
- Clarifying assignments using a rubric or agenda
- Editing writing assignments with a standard rubric
- Using progress reports from general education teachers to discuss: quality of work, missing assignments, and classroom behavior
- Integrating strategies/study skills instruction with upcoming assignments and tests
- Monitoring long term assignments/projects by breaking them into manageable steps that can be monitored and reviewed.
- Modeling time management – planning, preparing, and pacing.
- Writing in journals.
